So, you’ve got your hands on a gorgeous new silk scarf—maybe it's a SLINK piece! You love the bold colours and the way it instantly elevates any outfit. Now, you want to make sure it stays looking amazing for years to come, and we've got you covered.

Caring for silk might sound intimidating, but it's super simple once you know the golden rules. Think of it less as a chore and more as a little act of love for your favourite accessory.

To Wash or Not to Wash?

The first rule of thumb is: don't over-wash it. Silk is a naturally fibre which resists dirt and odours, so you only need to wash it when it’s visibly dirty or has a stain. When you do, always check the care label first. If it says "dry clean only," try and do that. If not, hand-washing is your best bet.

The Hand-Wash Method

Machine washing, even on a delicate cycle, can be too harsh and may snag the delicate fibres. Always go with the gentle, loving approach.

  1. Prep Your Space: Make sure your sink is sparkling clean.

  2. Use the Right Detergent: Grab a mild, pH-neutral detergent specifically for delicates or silk. You can find these at most supermarkets or online. Avoid anything harsh like bleach—that's a big no-no. You can also use dishwashing liquid, as long as it is a gentle one.

  3. Cool Water is Key: Fill the sink with cool or lukewarm water. Hot water can damage the silk and cause the colours to fade or bleed.

  4. A Gentle Soak: Submerge your scarf and swish it around a few times. Don’t rub or wring it out aggressively. Just let it soak for about 3-5 minutes.

  5. Rinse & Refresh: Drain the soapy water and rinse your scarf with clean, cool water until all the soap is gone. For an extra boost of colour, you can add a spoonful of white vinegar to the final rinse.

The Drying Process

This is where you need a little patience. Never, ever, ever put silk in the dryer. The heat will shrink it and ruin the fabric's lustre.

  1. Squeeze, Don't Wring: Gently squeeze out the excess water. Don’t twist or wring the scarf, as this can break the fibres.

  2. Towel Roll-Up: Lay a clean, dry towel flat on a surface. Place your scarf on top and then roll the towel up, like a sushi roll. This will absorb most of the remaining water.

  3. Air Dry: Unroll the towel and lay your scarf flat on a clean, dry surface or hang it on a plastic hanger. Keep it away from direct sunlight or heat, as this will cause fading.

What About Ironing?

Most of the time, you can skip this step! Silk is a natural fibre, and small creases often fall out on their own. But if you need to, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Keep it Damp: Iron the scarf while it's still a little bit damp.

  2. Low and Slow: Set your iron to the lowest heat or the "silk" setting.

  3. Iron from the Back: Iron the back (the non-shiny side) of the scarf. You can even place a clean, thin cloth between the iron and the silk for extra protection.

Last But Not Least: Storage

To keep your scarf looking its best, store it flat or lightly folded in a cool, dry place. Hanging it up is also a great option. If you have multiple scarves, roll them up and store them side-by-side to save space and prevent creases. Avoid tightly sealing them in plastic bags, as silk needs to breathe.

By following these simple steps, your vibrant, beautiful scarf will stay a go-to piece in your wardrobe for a very, very long time.
